The DOs And DON’Ts Of Moving In Together
If you have been dating for quite some time and you are looking to make things a bit more serious, moving in together might be the next logical step. Here are a few dos and don’ts you should consider along the way.
DO talk to people who know the two of you as a couple, to get some insight. Sometimes people believe it would be a great idea to move in together, yet other people can clearly see that this is a mistake. Get a few opinions and take them into consideration before moving forward.
DON’T rush into things. If you have only been seeing each other for a short time, rushing into a living arrangement can cause some serious damage. Ideally, you should know someone for quite some time before relinquishing a part of your living space. This will ensure that you are not moving out as fast as you moved in.
DO consider looking for an entirely different place. Many couples disagree over whose home is best, but it is a good idea to find a whole new space. Moving in together should be the start of a brand new life, so leave all of that baggage behind in your old place and get a new one.
DON’T forget to talk about house rules. Every home has to have rules in order for things to function as they should. While you do not have to follow any when living alone, both of you may have expectations of the other, once you live in the same place. Have a chat about what each person expects and hash everything out before moving forward.
DO look for a place that is convenient for both of you. Selfishness needs leave when you are looking for a place, together. You have to consider the needs of your partner as much as your own. Otherwise, the place you choose will not be ideal for both of you.
DON’T keep the keys to your old place. Some people do this so they will have a back-up plan in the event that the union does not work. Walking into a living arrangement preparing for the worst probably means the two of you are really not ready.
Living together can be a step that brings a couple closer, but it can also drive them apart. Keep all of this advice in mind if you want moving in together to be a positive experience.
